A special meeting dedicated to the 60th anniversary of signing the Convention for the Protection of Human Rights and Fundamental Freedoms to be held in The Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine on October 22.

Volodymyr Lytvyn, Chairman of The Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine, made this statement at the press conference in Kharkiv on Friday.

Dwelling upon the contents of this document, V.Lytvyn stated that the access to the Convention is ‘actually a pass to the Council of Europe." "This pass opens the way to the common European space, the European Union," he stated.

The Head of the Parliament stated that the Resolution was adopted almost simultaneously with the General Assembly of the National Academy of Legal Sciences of Ukraine dedicated to the anniversary of the Convention. "It was of great importance for me not only to report on the situation with the human rights protection in Ukraine, the stand of the Parliament and the Chairman of The Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine, but also to feel the moods and see the areas of research pursued by the academic community," V.Lytvyn stated.

The Head of the Parliament highly appreciated the speeches delivered during the Assembly. He admitted that the main problem was to combine theory with the laws and practical life.
